Answer from Lantzville Historical Society President, Lynn Reeve:
The holly farm was planted in the late 1920s by John (I think) Eby, who had a summer place out here but lived most of the year in Nanaimo. Mabel Hurford (born 1915 and died about 3 years ago now) recalled playing with the Eby girl during their summers in Lantzville (Mabel's family also had a summer place in Lantzville) and playing leapfrog over the holly trees. I think the Hunters bought the holly farm in the early 1950s. It would have taken nearly that long for the farm to become productive as holly is not a fast growing tree. I always wanted to interview Lillian Hunter but never quite got round to it ... the story of all lives I think. The holly trees were bought from a nursery in Nanaimo

Hello I'm looking for information about the Lantzville Holly Farm. Any history and/or related articles would be helpful.

We have lived in the area for over 30 years and have often drove past the old Holly Farm, and have a small working farm of our own.

Recently we became the owners of the 1955 International Cub tractor that worked the Holly Farm. It had been sitting under the holly trees for about 12 years, and we are pleased to now have it in running order.

We look forward to attending the New Market Garden and showing it as part of the static display on May 27th, 2012.

If it is possible that you could assist to provide us with any information it would be most welcome. The log articles that we have read also mentioned that Lillian Hunter had provided the Lantzville Historical Society with her life story which we also would find quite interesting.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello Brian
I have just read the post of Feb 9th 2012 and am very interested in it as my 2 x g.grandfather was Charles Edward Le Gallais, captain of the SS Grecian for for about 13 years. Please could you tell me where the image posted was obtained? I am keen to know if this would definitely have been what I consider 'his' Grecian as there were a few others.

Its kinda sad but there is Henry Gross's "Shannon". This is about some unspecified family tragedy compounded by the family dog swimming out to sea. "maybe she'll find an island, where there's a shady tree, just like the one in our backyard." Or maybe not. It always reminds me of the day a dog swam after its master who had gone out in his boat from the ramp at Shoregrove in the 90's. The boat disappeared from sight towards Ballenas. The dog, a black Lab and a good swimmer, also disappeared from sight. Several other boaters went out to try and rescue it but couldn't find it. Hours later a tired and bedraggled Lab walked back along the beach. A happy ending. But there is still that haunting sad song.
