Aspengrove’s Grade 1 students have been learning about how we depend on each other at home, at school, in our community and in the world. When they heard and saw images of Typhoon Haiyan having hit the Philippines, the children wanted to help a fellow country in need. The Grade 1’s decided to make Christmas crafts to sell at the school’s Christmas concert and, with the help of their Grade 4 Big Buddies, they busily made Christmas decorations over several weeks. After volunteering with disaster relief in the Philippines, an Aspengrove parent also gave a presentation to the Grade 1’s to explain what their donation will be used for.
The students were thrilled to be able to donate $500 from their Christmas decorations proceeds to the Red Cross to be distributed to the Philippines and this amount will be matched by the Canadian Government.
