Carina passed away peacefully in Nanaimo, B.C. at the age of 90. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James Stewart Bland, in 1984 (Victoria, B.C.). She was also predeceased by her sister Georgina and brother Donald of Ireland. She will be greatly missed by her adoring children, Jonathan (Iva), Nina (Brian), Jennifer (Jean), and Alastair (Hana). She will be lovingly remembered by her 13 grandchildren: Carina, Julia, Christopher, and William (Lauzon); Nicholas and Thomas (Bland); Alexander, Jamie, Stephanie, and Andrew (Day); and Oliver, Jack and Brian (Bland). She will also be dearly missed by her sister Barbara Bell (Vancouver, B.C.), brother Ian Bell (Wales) and brother David Bell (Australia), as well as her nieces and nephews. Carina was born in Dundalk, Ireland. As a young physiotherapist, serving in the British Army Medical Corps, she met and married Dr. James Stewart Bland. They emigrated from Chichester, England in 1964 with four young children to Canada, settling in Victoria. Carina led a very full and adventurous life that included riding, gliding (she held a British record), flying, tennis, skiing and windsurfing. She was an avid gardener. Carina loved to read, study languages and travel the world. In 2008 she moved from Victoria to Lantzville. All the family are so grateful for the daily nurturing and support of Jonathan, Iva, and the boys – Oliver, Jack and Brian. The family thanks Sandra and the other dedicated caregivers who, along with her family, helped to fulfill her wish to stay in her own home. Thanks also to the doctors and nurses at Nanaimo General Hospital for their thoughtful care.
