It was a sea of blue t-shirts on the streets and trails of Qualicum Beach on Sunday June 27th. Thirty seven students and one adult team of three from Seaview Elementary participated, many of them in their first triathlon, under sunny skies. Clair and Dana Florence, Hayden Landa, Peter Morch, Anna Page, participated in the Tiny Tri for kids between 4 and 7 years old. The youth between ages 8 and 12 swam 100m, biked 4.5km and ran 1km. Five teams participated: 8 and 9 year olds: The Milo Monsters (4th), Anita Westfalowski, Austin Leamann, and Alex Berry Dillen (2nd), and The Seaview Sea Monsters (3rd). The 10 to 12 year old teams of Mikaela and Sofia Robinson with Meg Montgomery (1st), and Erin Berry Dillen, Morgan Burke, and Clair Thomas (3rd). Individually completing the same event were our 8 and 9 year olds: Miles Jang (3rd), Keelin Nixon (3rd), Kayley Morch (7th), Alexia Lindsay (8th), Mackenzie Belyea (9th), Kenzie Alyward (10th), and our 10 and 11 year olds: Chase Landa (4th), Steen Rasmussen (5th), Candon Nixon (11th), and Rosalie Cross (8th). The youth (12-14 year olds) swam 200m, biked 9km, and ran 2.5km. Seamus O’Toole place first in his age group, with Cameron Antifave coming in 8th. The Wild Ones placed 3rd in the team category. The Seaview Swashbucklers, with our principal Patrick Young pulling off an amazing bike ride, placed 4th out of 8 mixed teams. Our hard training paid off and there were smiles all day. A huge thank you to everyone who donated bikes, Triathlon Canada, Peter McCaffery (who repaired all of those bikes), the parents who helped on our training days, Bryan Rehill, Susan Cormie and Frontrunners – it was your support that made this event for these children possible.
